8 things you must know about Keyword SEO

You can significantly improve your search engine ranking if you know how to use keywords in a blog post. Keyword SEO begins with Keyword Research. Once you have searched the right keyword your next task will be to add it in right places in your article.

Beginner bloggers often find it difficult to use right keywords in right places resulting in loss of potential traffic. There are several things you can do to optimize your blog content using the right Keywords.

I am sure, as a beginner blogger, you would be looking for the answers to the questions related to Keyword SEO. Let’s cover all these questions one by one in this article.

  1. How many times you should use keywords in an article?

Ideally, you should not use the Keyword more than 4 to 5 times in an article of 500 words excluding Meta description and HTML tags. Depending on the length of your article you can increase the number of keywords.

However, the keyword density must not exceed 3%. That means in an article of 1000 words you should ideally use the keyword 10-12 times. However, some bloggers find a keyword density of 2% ideal for the blog posts. Since there in no hard and fast rule, you can use your discretion to determine the right density.

2. How to check the keyword density?

The formula that you can use to check the keyword density is (Number of Keywords/Number of words in the article)*100. For example, if you are using a keyword 5 times in an article of 500 words your keyword density would be (5/500)*100= 1%.

If you are using Keyword phrases you can use the following formula: (Number of Keywords*Number of phrases/article word counts)*100. For example, if you are planning to use two-word phrase “Keyword Tips” 5 times as a keyword in an article of 500 words your keyword density would be (5*2/500)*100= 2%.

Moreover, you can use several online keyword density tools to check the keyword density such as Small SEO tool density checker.

3. How many keywords you should use in an article?

It entirely depends on the length of your blog post. If you write a short article, you should ideally target one keyword per post. Focusing on one keyword will help you compete effectively with the existing as well as potential competitors.

On the other hand, if your blog posts are long and cover a topic in depth you can target 2 to 5 keywords. However, the most important thing is to target the right keywords rather than the number of keywords.

4. Where should you use Keyword in an article?

Ideally, you should add the Keyword in the following places in an article:
  • Title
  • Headings
  • Body
  • Images, charts, graphs (Title + Alt Attributes)
  • At the last paragraph of the article
  • Mega descriptions
  • HTML tag

5. When should you add the keywords in your article?

If you want to take full advantage of your keyword SEO efforts you should add it before publishing your post. Once you have published your post, you might find it difficult to add the keywords in right places.

When you add or remove a keyword after publishing your content, search engines might not be able to rank your post quickly. However, if you a great content you still stand a chance to rank higher in the search results sooner or later.

6. What type of keyword is good for SEO, Short Tail Or Long Tail?

You should use a mix of long tail and short tail keywords. If you own a small blog or website it would be difficult for you to rank higher for highly competitive one-word keyword or phrase such as Tablet, Best Tablet, or Cheap tablet etc.

You can significantly improve your chances of ranking higher in search results if you target short tail or long tail keywords with medium competition and a decent amount of traffic. Such keywords will not only help you rank higher in the search results but also target the right audience that you can convert easily.

7. What if you use wrong keywords for SEO?

If knowingly or unknowingly you are using wrong keywords in your blog content, Google can penalize your site for misguiding public. However, more than the penalty the thing that will hurt you more is the overall drop in the performance of your blog or website.

When knowingly or unknowingly you use wrong keywords, the amount of time your audience spends on your blog drops. Consequently, your blog’s bounce rate increases. High bounce rate suggests that either your content is not engaging or you have used wrong keywords to optimize your blog post. Consequently, search engines will lower your ranking in the search results.

8. What if you do not use Keyword in an article?

If you do not use a keyword in an article if would be difficult for search engine to include your pages in the relevant search results. Keywords help search engines understand the content of your blog which in turn helps search engine to show your content in relevant search results. Therefore, it is important that you should use the right keywords so that search engines can index your content.

If you do not add keywords in an article search engines will crawl your blog content to identify the relevant keywords to rank your page. However, in this method, you will rank high in the search engines only if search engines find your blog content unique with a decent amount of traffic.

Conclusion

There is no doubt keyword plays an important role in optimizing content for search engines. However, you must not compromise the quality of your content in your effort to add the right keywords in your article. You should write your content keeping in mind your audience rather than the search engine. You cannot capitalize on your keyword SEO effort unless you know how to write great content.

Using right keywords in right places facilitate the process of content optimization but it can never replace the efforts you put in to create great content. In today’s rapidly developing technological environment you never know when the search engine might undertake the task of keyword SEO. At that time content quality will be the sole criterion of ranking higher in the search engines.
